to check that we are actually meeting at the places mentioned, please contact the Birding group leader shown on this year's membership card.

This study group has members from South Tyneside, Ryton, Newcastle, Ponteland, Derwentside, Tynedale, Morpeth and others. We generally meet twice a month at various places to view and identify the wild birds.

Is this Crimdon or Hawthorn Dene?  History of the Northumbria Region Birding Group Holy Island
Howick Haven
The Harbour, Holy Island

We usually go out for a day, meeting at about ten o'clock at one of the sites, birding for a couple of hours before having our picnic lunch, then walking or driving to another nearby venue. Some people go home or to another group in the afternoon, but the stalwarts continue until dusk or weather stops us.

This year we have been to or are going to Bolam Lake, Castle Eden Dene, Bishop Middleham Quarry, Craster, Crimdon Dene, Hawthorn Dene, Seal Sands, Newton by the Sea, Holywell Pond, St. Mary's Wetland Reserve, Cresswell, Druridge, Chevington, Holy Island, Souter Point, Boldon Flats, Big Waters, Thornley Woods, Far Pasture and Washington WWT. We have other social occasions such as birthday parties, followed, of course, by a judicious touch of birding.

We are continuing the new regime started in 2008 where the outings will be led by four different members. The meeting places are available from the leader of each outing, by phone. Please refer to the programme - see below for link, and ring to let us know if you would like to come.

Fortunately for the rest of us, some of the group are very experienced birders who also happen to be good at passing on their knowledge without making us feel utter duffers.

Come along and get yourself entangled in the telescope legs, caught up in the binocular straps and embroiled in the excitement of the sightings.
