Northumbria Region U3A Residential School

Biology
Earth Sciences
Physics
Evening lecture on Stem Cells

These three subjects will take place on both Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th with an optional Geological Field Trip on Thursday 14th on a first come first served basis. You can only do two out of the three subjects so please indicate your choice when you apply.
Cost including three nights accommodation and all meals £220 (field trip extra)
To reserve your place please send a deposit of £50 using the form below. The balance will be due later, the actual date to be confirmed.
This event will be advertised Nationally in U3A News in June so please book now to avoid disappointment.
Accommodation is in mainly single en-suite rooms in the Durham campus but there are a limited number of twin rooms and disabled rooms. These will be booked on a first come first served basis so please state your requirements when making your booking.
You should also be aware that there is an approx half mile uphill walk between the Lecture Halls and Halls of Residence. Lunch will be taken at the Lecture Halls.
The event is limited to 100 participants. There are some places for day delegates for which the cost will be £100

U3A Science Event
Synopsis
This is a two day event taking place on the science site at Durham University hosted by the departments of Biology, Earth Sciences and Physics. Each of these three strands will offer a full day of activities for the delegates.
Each strand will repeat their activities on both days of the meeting enabling the delegates to attend any two of the three strands.
There will also be a geological field trip to the Northumbria Coast provided on a first come first served basis for one coach of delegates on the day after the meeting ends.
Each strand will provide a mix of the following activities:
1. Biology
Short talks / question and answer sessions:
Back-yard Biodiversity
The Hidden Beauty of Plants
Sex, Corruption and Deceit: the Sordid Truth about Wild Flowers
Short laboratory-based microscopy sessions looking at small organisms that live in the soil and in mosses. These would last a maximum of two hours and be for small groups.
Botanic garden tours - Around the Botanical World in 90 Minutes
We may also make use of the newly established nature trails through the woodland and hay meadow at the bottom of the Botanic garden see:

2. Earth Sciences
Understanding Earths rocks and minerals - Short introductory talks with hands on looking at sample specimens and thin sections down the microscope.
The long-term co-evolution of life and the Planet - A look at the fossil record through time and what it can tell us about the planets evolution.
3. Physics
Short talks / question and answer sessions:
A Beginner’s Guide to the Universe
New Views of the Planets
Other Worlds – The Search for Earth-Like Planets
The Big Bang Machine – The Large Hadron Collider
A User’s Guide to the Night Sky - Introductory talk with hands on guide to the night sky.
A Guide to Galaxy Zoo
Weather permitting there may also be the chance to observe the night sky using the departmental telescopes
Prof. Hutchison (Hild and Bede Principal) will give an after dinner lecture on Stem Cells.
