Groups - General Information for Prospective Members
ART GROUP is small and self -programming and meets monthly in the Pink Lane
Centre to develop its members’ skills in painting. Most members use
watercolours, although other media have been tried, and some tutored assistance
is available. New members are very welcome to come along and try their hand,
and see if this is the relaxing morning they have been looking for.
BRIDGE Come and join a social bridge club. Plenty of spaces available, at any standard, excluding beginners. We will accept single players who would be prepared to be partnered by whoever else turns up. Only £2.50 for 3 hours including tea, coffee and biscuits.
BIRD WATCHING This group functions at Regional level and involves visits to a variety of habitats north and south of the Tyne, spreading westwards from the coast. This enables us to see most of our resident birds, as well as many migrants.We usually take a packed lunch and arrrange car sharing.
COFFEE MORNINGS-OPEN HOUSE are held at St. John's Church Hall, on the third Friday of every month 10.30am–noon. Call in for a chat a cuppa and to catch up with the news.
COMPUTING - Monday class is for beginners, Wednesdays for computer owners where we tackle problems encountered in Desktop Publishing, scanning, digital camera use, creating web sites, e-mail etc. and look at the latest techno-gadgets and news.
CRAFT We meet fortnightly and enjoy working on different projects. We are a friendly group and help one another with any problems.
DISCUSSION This group meets every third Monday of the month at 2pm. Subjects have included “What is U3A all about?” “Law and Order”, “Does Life begin after 70?” This lively group enjoys exchanging views and opinions and so we get to know each other better. It is not academic or high level and all are welcome even if they don’t voice their opinions.
GOOD READ At each meeting members discuss a book chosen some months before.
FAMILY HISTORY - ever wondered where your ancestors came from? Have you an old shadowy photograph of someone in your family and don’t know who they are? Have you done any research into your family history and could possibly assist in showing others how to get information they need? Then why not join our group, which meets monthly. We visit the library, archives and use the internet occasionally at Pink Lane where we share information and help guide you to create your family tree.
PHILOSOPHY -
– 4th Tues 2pm This group is watching and discussing a series of lectures on dvd by a professor of Philosophy..
JAZZ Fans come together to attend jazz events in local concert halls, pubs and clubs to broaden their appreciation of the music. They also meet monthly to listen to music.
LUNCHEON CLUBS - There are two of these; Club 1 meets once a month at a hotel in Jesmond for a 2 course lunch with coffee; Club 2 meets once a month at a venu in the area, or beyond, for whatever is on offer!
MAH JONG - You will be welcome whether you are experienced or a beginner.
MOBILE PHONE HELP – This group is held occasionally, when someone decides they would like to be able to text their grandchildren, or have been given a cast off phone with no instructions. This shows what sort of things we might cover in a lesson….
MUSIC FOR PLEASURE Members listen to and study music, its forms, orchestration and the different elements used by the composers. All are illustrated with musical examples.
PHOTOGRAPHY - How to get the best out of your camera, practical help and discussion.
PLANTS AND GARDENS Members usually meet once a month and enjoy visits to gardens and garden centres and hold occasional indoor meetings to share knowledge and swap plants
PLAY READING - A set of plays is chosen from the library each month for the group to read. It is relaxed and light-hearted.
QUIZ The Quiz group has been going for about 5 years, and meets in Pink Lane Centreonthe second Monday of the moth at1.45 p.m. You don't have to be an Albert Einstein or even a Stephen Fry to join. N.B. To comply with Fire Regulations the maximum number allowed to be present in Pink Lane at one time is 22..During the League from Jan-April, George will hold a trial at Pink Lane Centre on the third Friday of each month, beginning on 18 Jan 2008. Please ring George to see if you can come if you are not already expected.
SCRABBLE The group meets monthly and members enjoy a relaxed non-confrontational series of games, with much help offered to new or “lapsed” players. Competition is light-hearted.
SINGING FOR PLEASURE Members sing old favourites, folk music and classical songs, either in unison or in two parts.
SUNDAY CINEMA - By prior arrangement, a visit to a local cinema after a meal out.
TAI CHI STYLE - This group meets every Tuesday morning in Jesmond for sessions of Qi Gong (similar to Tai Chi) and we sometimes do various types of massage and meditation.
TALKING ABOUT ART The group meets monthly and its purpose is to discuss all varieties of the art we see around us and in our local galleries. Most meetings are held in the Centre where we look at a host of materials available from U3A’s National Resource Centre, the Library Service, etc. to make ourselves more informed about the topic. You don’t have to be an expert.
THEATRE GROUP Members meet three times a year to plan visits to local theatres, then the group convenor makes the bookings for productions such as those by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Opera North.
TRAVEL GROUP This group is being reviewed. It is a regional group, so the rest of the U3As have to be consulted.
WALKING GROUP The group meets most months for a walk of varying distances (usually 5 – 6 miles), Members usually meet at the starting point at 10.30 am and walk a steady pace, taking time to look around and have a chat, finishing mid-afternoon after a packed lunch stop. We operate a car sharing scheme, so non-drivers may be able to get a lift to the start of walks.
